… air temperature in the shade and 105 degrees real feel even the A/C has a hard struggle to maintain a decent temperature inside our (poorly insulated) house, especially as even at night the house doesn’t really cool down, with 77 degrees air temperature and 81 degrees with the heat index worked in. In addition to those daily and nightly temperatures the fact that these temperatures have been around for more than 2 weeks by now adds insofar as the whole house has heated up considerably.
We don’t btw. have central A/C but window units only. And at present that for the living- area of the house [living-room, dining-room and kitchen] …
A/C for the Living-Area of the House
… is set to 71 degrees, but can only give us 75 degrees room temperature, even if it’s quite biggish as far as BTUs go [18,000 if I remember correctly]. I’ve just put a temporary plywood roof above it and will have to see if that helps by putting the window unit in the shade. And I’ve also cleaned the air filter inside the unit so that it is no longer clogged by dirt. That might help and improve its performance, too.

The only good thing about that heat: even the weeds are wilting! 😉 As to us surviving these summers: on the one hand, one gets used to them – somewhat. But I think that it’s more and more difficult for us to stand that heat and humidity the older we get. Thus our air-conditioning is working overtime.

A clean A/C filter will certainly help. You might remind a few friends to check theirs so the cooler works efficiently. 105 is HOT!
Not that it has helped (very) much as far as air temperatures in the house are concerned. Maybe that was expecting too much with those outside temps. But I hope that the fan in the window unit has an easier life now that the filter has been cleaned.
I guess it times like this that all of us wish we had a subterranean home where the temperature stayed a constant 60 degrees year round.

ich wuerde sofort mit dir tauschen, ich komm nach Tx. und du ziehst hier hoch nach Oh. wir haben dieses jahr keinen richtigen sommer. zwischen 75-83 degrees im durchschnitt. ich haette gerne 100 degrees.
als wir noch in NC gewohnt haben, hatten wir den ganzen sommer ueber auch fast jeden tag 100 degrees. da war der rasen richtig hart und ausgetrocknet. und hier muessen wir 2 mal in der woche maehen, weil es hier so oft regnet. jedenfalls diesen sommer.

na ja, auch wenn ich mich über Hitze, Luftfeuchtigkeit und Dürre hier immer wieder beklage: nach Ohio wollte ich denn nun doch nicht. Es ist mir ein bisschen zu weit im Landesinnern. Hier haben wir ja die Golfküste in wirklich erreichbarer Entfernung [knapp 2 Stunden oer Auto]. Wir tragen uns zwar mit Umzugsgedanken, aber dann nur zur Texas Hill Country.

Hallo Petra,
da kann ich nur sagen: man gewöhnt sich dran – auch wenn es nicht leicht ist. Aber ich bin es ja auch selber schuld. Ich bin ja schließlich freiwillig hierher gezogen. Oder vielleicht doch nicht ganz? Nach dem Motto, “halb zog sie ihn, halb sank er hin.”? 😉 Aber wieder im Ernst: drinnen, mit der Klimaanlage, kann man es natürlich wirklich aushalten. Und draußen muss man eben aufpassen: sich nicht zu sehr anstrengen [wenn denn überhaupt], möglichst im Schatten bleiben, leichte und luftige Kleidung tragen einschließlich Kopfbedeckung [die breitkrempigen Stetsons haben schon ihren Sinn hier] und vor Allem trinken, trinken und nochmals trinken.
