Last weekend we were in Fredericksburg again and on Sunday evening we went to Mamacita’s for supper. It’s a very well run restaurant with a nice ambience, and fairly biggish at that. I must admit, I was impressed, especially with the quality of the service. Those of you who follow my blog on a regular basis will know about my “pet peeve” re service in American restaurants, even in quality ones, viz. that you usually are rushed. But not here. Our waiter really left us enough time to enjoy our appetizer unhurriedly, before he came up with the entrees.
As to the appetizer: we had “Queso Flameado“. That’s a cheese-and-chorizo-sausage mix which is lighted [after some pure alcohol has been poured over it] at your table and then put on tortillas. Our waiter was really adept at managing this dish and it was a pleasure just to watch him handle his forks. Not only that it was very tasty, it was also, as our waiter told us with a twinkle in his eyes, one of the least fattening dishes they serve.
As a main dish we had Poquito de Todo [a beef and a cheese enchilada, a tamale topped with chili con carne and melted cheese, a crispy beef taco with lettuce, tomato and cheese, with rice and refried beans] for Mary and Beef Fajitas [top-quality outside skirt steak, marinated and charbroiled, topped with grilled onion, bell peppers and jalapenos, with rice and refried beans] for me. This meat really was the best I’ve ever had with fajitas: succulent yet well done, seasoned just a tad, and absolutely tender.
Unfortunately the portions were so large that we had no room for the wonderful desserts they serve there. Maybe, at some time, I’ll be back there in the afternoon, just for “Kaffee und Kuchen” [coffee and cake], as we say in Germany.
